When I started my practice as a Functional Nutritionist specializing in GI health over 10 years ago I honestly didn’t want to take on weight loss clients.
I simply had no interest. I thought: “weight loss is easy, all you need is a balanced diet and to exercise more” and “people just needed to try harder, move more, eat less.”

I was fascinated – this wasn’t what I had been taught about weight loss. I became interested in the mechanisms that make the body hold on to weight and was shocked to discover that the reasons for stubborn weight gain and my area of study were deeply connected.
For example, the calories in / calories out model that we had grown up being told was scientific truth is not only false, but actually makes you gain MORE weight. The less you eat the more your body ‘dials back’ your metabolism; meaning you gain weight easily and lose weight slowly. This is the mechanism that allowed our ancestors to survive cold winters or famine.
It’s the ‘danger mode’ your body enters, in this case from starving, that sets your body in motion to put on fat.

It directly affects how your body breaks down food, it regulates the speed of your metabolism, modulates how you utilize insulin, and if it’s out of balance it can cause major and widespread inflammation.
Any disfunction in these systems – an overgrowth of bacteria, a parasite, or food sensitivity – can trigger your body's ‘danger mode’ and contribute to or create a rapid weight gain / slow weight loss pattern.
Even the lack of or overgrowth of specific strains of bacteria can effect weight gain directly. For example, if a keystone bacteria (like akkermansia) is low you will never lose weight.
